Dear praying friends,
I love love love love sharing Jesus at Universities. It’s a tremendous mission field, where God sends our way students from all walks of life, and from all over the world!
We had a fruitful Spring, focusing on The University of Massachusetts, and The University of New Hampshire.
Please let me share a quick testimony that demonstrates the power of going back to the same spots to evangelize over and over again. A student named Tommy approached my partner, Chris. Tommy said, “I’ve seen you guys out here for 4 years. And I always take a booklet from you. This past year I got saved!” Tommy gave a good testimony, and he said he attends Durham Evangelical Church, which we know to be a solid, Bible-believing Church. It’s actually the Church I first went to when I got saved back in 1993!!! What a super encouragement to meet someone like Tommy!
One other student that really stood out was a transgendered student named Jack. More on her below in the photos.
Other than reaching unsaved Students, University ministry is a blessing because we run into Christian students, some of whom have never seen effective Open Air Ministry. I hope and pray that God uses us to embolden Christian students to share the gospel with strangers.
In the photos and descriptions below, I make reference to “The Good Person Test.” This is a tool that I’ve found to be very very effective in getting students to think about eternal things.
Please feel free to click on the graphic below to download a copy of “The Good Person Test.” Please print it out and use it in your own personal evangelism. And if you want it as a Microsoft Word document, so you can edit it and add your own contact information, just let me know and I’ll get it to you.
You can always find the latest version of “The Good Person Test” at: http://luke-15.org/good-person-test.pdf.
I’ll let the following photos explain what has happened on campus recently.
Please pray for us and those we meet!
This is Jack, a biological woman who thinks she's a man. I found this out by offering her a tract. I said, 'here you go maam,' and she said, 'I'm a dude.' We talked about gender and homosexually and God. I listened to her explain her position and she listened to me explain the gospel. It was a very friendly exchange that ended with a handshake. She took a gospel booklet. Please pray for Jack. She was sweet and even a bit contrite. I'd love to see her be born again, and also embrace that she's a woman.
Someone called the Police on us, but the Officers were very polite and let us continue our ministry work unhindered. You can see the Policeman on the left checking out our permit. We thank Jesus for favor with the authorities!
Many people are open to hearing about Jesus, like Allie here. After a short conversation with Chris, she took a Bible so she could read God's Word for herself. Praise God!
Here's a cool 'Divine Appointment.' When I was preaching this message, I ended by sharing my story of how I got saved and how I have a Jewish background. I almost never share that. Well, a Jewish student, named Kyle, was listening to my message. My boss, Eric, approached Kyle to ask him what he thought of my message, and the first thing he said to Eric was, 'I want to know how that Jewish guy came to believe in Jesus.' What an opening! So Eric shared my testimony with Kyle. Kyle was open and asked good questions.
This is Ken, a Roman Catholic student Eric spoke with for quite a while. Eric had Ken read Ephesians 2:8-9, as well as other scriptures. Eric told me that he thought Ken had a breakthrough and really understood salvation by grace through faith apart from works. Eric thinks Ken may have gotten saved right there! Please rejoice with me for the many great things Jesus is doing!
This is Chloe. Chris brought her through 'The Good Person Test' and said she appeared to be very open. Chloe took an evangelistic DVD and promised to watch later.
This is Marin, Kevin, and Victoria. Marin and Victoria appeared to be more open to the gospel than Kevin. Chris said they even expressed being contrite, which is an encouraging response!
This is Amy, and frankly, I believe she has one of the hardest hearts and seered consciouses I've encountered. Amy was quick to tell me she was a strong abortion advocate. I always want to talk about the gospel, not politics, but I figured I could find some common ground just to get started. So I asked her if a woman wanted to abort a baby that was 39-weeks gestation, certainly we could agree that was wrong. Nope. She refused to call a 39-week gestation baby a 'baby' and said the 'fetus' was not alive and the mother could definitely abort. So I said, 'new subject, where do you think you'll go when you die?' It was as if she had a prepared speech knocking down God, Jesus, the supernatural, Heaven, Hell, and the Bible. She was so hardened that she wouldn't hear any of my appeals. But here's the kicker; Amy comes from a Christian home of 7 homeschooled kids! She's completely rejected the truth taught to her. I know there's a Mom and Dad heartbroken for her. After we talked for about 30 minutes, I told her I'd be praying for her. She said, 'you can try to talk to your god, or one of the millions of other gods out there, or just meditate, whatever. It's all the same.' So I've got an idea! Let's pray and pray and pray for Amy so God gives her a NEW HEART and breaks through her hard conscious and makes her BORN AGAIN! Wouldn't that be amazing? If God could save me, He can save Amy. Thanks for your prayers!
This is Monkey, and he's an International Student from Malaysia. And, yes, he goes by 'Monkey.' He said it was his nickname since he was a kid. Anyhow, he was very interested in going through 'The Good Person Test' and appeared contrite when he realized he was guilty of being a liar, thief, blasphemer, and adulterer. I asked him if he knew what God did so guilty people could be forgiven, and he said, 'something about the cross, right?' So I had the pleasure of explaining what Jesus' work meant. It was awesome. The thing is, Monkey isn't so interested in Jesus, as he is interested in all religions, especially Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. I explained that only Jesus could die for his sins and therefore only Jesus is 'The Way.' We talked for a while. He's a great guy. He took a booklet called 'Why Christianity?' which also explains why Jesus is exclusive and our only hope. Please keep Monkey in your prayers.
I was invited by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, a Christian Student Organization at The University of New Hampshire, to be a part of their outreach. They setup a pop-up tent with posters that brought you through the gospel. This is Katelyn, and she told me she thought stranger evangelism was too pushy, and this display was over the edge. But then not much later she's doing an AMAZING job taking THREE unsaved students through the gospel message! Woo hoo! Oh how I want the next generation of Christians to know that we really can approach strangers and talk with them about Jesus!
This is Lex, a young woman who identified as 'Agnostic.' But as I spoke with her and asked questions, it was evident that she did believe in 'a god,' but just didn't know much about Him, despite 12 years of Catholic School. She let me take her through 'The Good Person Test' and she was surprised to hear that we're accepted by God by grace through faith and not of works. Lex is a very thoughtful and polite young lady and I pray she comes to true repentance and faith in Christ.
This is Austin. He introduced himself to me as a 'Physics Instructor' (at UNH) and threw a bunch of rapid-fire questions at me without letting me have much time to answer. His questions were plagiarized right out of Richard Dawkins materials. (Richard Dawkins is a famous and outspoken Atheist.) Even though Austin appeared to not be interested in learning, the gospel is the power God unto salvation, so I trust that The Holy Spirit can use what I shared to soften Austin's heart. Austin took a DVD called 'The Atheist Delusion.'
This is Maddie and Deus. They had contrition and tender hearts. They wanted Chris to pray for them. And they took an evangelistic DVD. Get this, Maddie told Chris that she has a friend from Arkansas who recently shared the gospel with her. God is at work!!!
This is Robert, who came rushing up to me wanting to talk about God. Robert is a self-proclaimed Atheist, and when I asked why, he gave me a list of Bible teachings that don't make sense to him. The thing is, he had really bad information about what Christians allegedly believe. The first thing he had a problem with was that the Bible teachers that we can't know for sure that we're going to Heaven, so in Robert's view, there's no point in following God. So I opened up to 1 John 5:13 and had him read it for himself. 'I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.' I showed him that if we believe in the Son of God, we can KNOW that we have eternal life. This was one example of him not knowing what the Bible teachers, yet being convinced the Bible is mistaken. I said, 'Robert, you have a lot of questions, and I encourage that. But let's say that I answered every one if your questions to your satisfaction, and you believed 100% that Jesus is God and rose from the dead, would you worship Him?' Robert said, 'No, I'd spit in his face.' And I said, 'And that's the problem. Your issue with God is not a lack of evidence, but a hard heart. We all start out with those, and Jesus gives us a new heart when we are born again.' Please pray for Robert's salvation. If God could save me, He can save anyone!
In addition to the people in the photos, some other people who stood out are:
- Anita: Anita is Gay and struggles with the idea that God would forbid homosexuality. Chris did a good job reasoning with Anita, and she appeared to be contrite and open.
- Max: Max is an older gentleman, probably in his 50’s. He was very loud (causing a bit of a scene) and he had very strange and unusual theories about where the Bible comes from.
- Zach: Zach was very flippant and rude. But as Chris went through The Good Person Test, bringing up God’s Commandments, he changed and became less rude and more open. He asked some hard questions. Please pray for Zach.
- Lexi and Veda: Lexi and Veda were brash with me at first, but as we went through the Commandments, they softened. It’s powerful to share God’s Word with someone.
- Aiden and Jay: Aiden and Jay can be described as “feisty evolutionists.” They had all kinds of “arguments,” and Chris did a super job answering them, but then transitioning the conversation to be about the gospel. Aiden and Jay both took an evangelistic DVD!
- Bridgette: When I asked Bridgette what she believes, she claimed to be an Atheist. But as I asked her questions about that, it became apparent to me, and I hope to her, that really she’s just angry at her Catholic upbringing. She came around when we talked about Jesus, and not the evil some have done in his name.
- James: Meeting James was unique because he didn’t want to have a discussion with me, but did want to take The Good Person Test. He asked if he could have a copy of the paper because he wanted to read it on his own. So I gave him a copy and he left. I can’t remember that happening before. Well, the gospel is clearly presented on the paper, so please pray for James.
As you can see, God uses University Ministry to reach a lot of people who might not otherwise hear the truth about Jesus. I’m sad that it’s over for the summer. But I look forward, Lord willing, to ministering at the Universities again in the Fall!!!
We love you and thank Jesus for you!
Thank you so much for your prayers, financial support, and notes of encouragement, without which we would not be able to reach the Lost for Jesus Christ!
Please contact us anytime and let us know how we can pray for you!
And please feel free to forward this to anyone you think would be blessed by it!
For Christ and His gospel,
Mark, Shelby, Vivienne, Juliana, Caleb, and Gabriella
