I’ve found that what most Cults have in common is that they’re wrong about who Jesus is.
Let’s face it, the concept of One God existing in Three Persons is tough to wrap our minds around. No wonder satan has a field day creating false religions that deny the Trinity.
We believe in the Trinity, not because it makes sense to us, but because it is taught in Scripture. We always have to rely on Scripture.
The teaching of “The Trinity” does NOT teach that we believe in three gods, or that God can change to exist in three different forms. Cults often try to misrepresent what the Trinity is. Let’s stick to the Bible.
The teaching of “The Trinity” says that The Father is God, and Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and there is only One God.
Hard to wrap your mind around? Of course it is. That’s because there isn’t anything in the Universe remotely like God. Think about it. When we want to learn about something, we typically find something similar to compare it to. For example, if you want to explain to a child what a pear is, you tell him or her that it’s similar to an apple. We describe things by comparing them to similar objects all the time.
That’s one of the reasons why it’s so hard to understand the nature of God. There isn’t anything at all even remotely similar to God in all of Creation! God Himself declares, “To whom will you liken me and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be alike?” (Isaiah 46:5).
We do not understand the teaching of “The Trinity” by human reason or invention. We believe it by faith because we have faith in the written Word of God.
I would like to share with you three simple Scriptures that I hope will help you when you “make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15).
There are many places in the Bible that teach that God raised Jesus from the dead. Some of them are: , , , , , , .
But check this out. According to John 2:18-22, Jesus raised Himself from the dead!
18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Ask someone who denies the Trinity to explain what that passage means.
The Bible teaches that God raised Jesus from the dead. The Bible also teaches that Jesus raised Himself from the dead. Jesus must be God.
Have the person who is denying that Jesus is God read the second half of 1 Kings 8:39. It says, “for you, you only, know the hearts of all the children of mankind” (1 Kings 8:39). Let them read the surrounding context so they are convinced that the “you” refers to God.
Ask them if, according to that Scripture, who alone knows the hearts of man.”
Then have them read Matthew 9:4: “But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, ‘Why do you think evil in your hearts?'” (Matthew 9:4).
Ask them if Jesus knows people’s thoughts and hearts.
Then have them read to you Luke 5:22. “When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, ‘Why do you question in your hearts?'” (Luke 5:22).
Ask them if Jesus knows people’s thoughts and hearts.
Then have them read to you Revelation 2:23: “And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart” (Revelation 2:23). Allow them to read the surrounding verses to ensure that it is Jesus speaking.
Ask them if Jesus knows people’s thoughts and hearts.
Since God “alone” knows the hearts of man, and Jesus knows the hearts of man, then Jesus is God.
In Luke 8, verses 36-39, Jesus removed demons from a man who was possessed. Check out the last verse in that section.
Jesus said, “‘Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.’ And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him” (Luke 8:39).
Notice that “God” and “Jesus” are clearly used interchangeably in this one verse. Jesus is God.
Many Cults and False Religions are quick to show verses that highlight Jesus’ humanity, and with that the Bible-believing Christian has no problem. The teaching of the “Trinity” does not say that Jesus was never man. It says that although Jesus is and always has been God, at one point in time he entered time and space and came in the form of a man. This is called the incarnation.
It is true that Jesus said “the Father is greater than I” (John 14:28). It is also true that Jesus was hungry (Luke 4:2), was tired (John 4:6) and needed to learn (Luke 2:52.)
Though these may appear to show that Jesus was merely a created being, it actually shows that while on earth Jesus subjected himself to the trials of humanity.
It is not honest to only present the verses that show Jesus’ incarnation humanity while ignoring the many scriptures that teach his deity.
I pray that these three Scriptures were helpful to you, and will help you in your ministry to those who deny the Son of God. These are merely a very beginning.
