Proving God’s Existence with Sandcastles

Here’s the text version of what I shared in the video:

Something neat happened last summer when I was doing Beach Evangelism.

People would sometimes ask me for PROOF that God exists.

Picture the scene. We’re evangelizing at Hampton Beach, in New Hampshire. Every June they have a large professional sandcastle competition that brings in sculptors from all over. And these impressive sandcastles were literally on the other side of the fence from where we were.

So I got an idea. When the next person asked me for proof for God, I simply said to them…

“There have been a ton of sand storms lately. In fact, the sand storms have been at beaches like ours all over the world.

And here’s the cool part! After the wind dies down, and the sand stops flying everywhere, formations like these have been appearing due to the sand storms! (And I point to the sand castles that are literally tens of feet from us.)

The person usually smiles because they know that’s impossible.

So I say something like, “Now you know that’s impossible. Could I pay you enough money to get you to believe these sand castles came about randomly through a sand storm?” (They always say “No.”)

And so I say, “Of course you’re not going to believe these sand castles were made by chance. They’re intricate, and even have logos you’re familiar with, and some have letters that spell things.

You say, “You know, you and I are A LOT more impressive than these sand castles. We have DNA in every cell, more complicated than the greatest supercomputer, telling the cell to be a heart cell, or a lung cell, or an eyelash cell. We have eyes with photosensitive receptors so we can see these sand castles. We have brains to appreciate the sand castles. And we have a complicated symbiotic digestive system to eat the junk food at the beach!”

And here comes the winning shot. You say, “You know, with how amazing we’re made, compared to us, that sand castle is just a pile of dirt. You know you’re made by God because nothing is made by itself no matter how much time and chance you give it.”

And everyone I talked to using this line of reasoning agreed.

And of course they did, because the Scriptures say that all who claim to be Atheists are lying to themselves. Everyone believes in God because God has made it clear to them. See .
