Building Up a Local Church for Kids Evangelism (1 Day Training and Practice)

Posted on Jun 13 , 2017 in Blog & Church_Teams & Kids_Ministry & Training

Dear Praying Friends,

One of my favorite parts of the ministry is building up the Church to be more effective evangelists!

I LOVE it when local Churches send teams to train with us and go out to put what we’ve learned into practice!

Probably the best way to be trained and gain experience is to spend the week with us on a Mission Trip, but also valuable is a one-day Evangelism Training Day.

We had one of these a few Saturdays ago. A team from a nearby Church spent the day with us.

In the morning, Eric and I taught the team the following:

  • learned practical Evangelism and street Apologetics
  • how to run an impromptu Kids Bible Club in a neighborhood
  • teach a Bible Song to kids
  • lead a Bible Verse “hangman puzzle” with kids
  • share Christ one-on-one with a kid
  • sometimes a Church Member will learn how to paint up and deliver a Bible message to kids with the paint board!!!

This is a win-win for the Kingdom of God. A neighborhood is reached for Christ, and Christians go home to their Church more equipped to be effective ambassadors for Jesus Christ!

The photos really tell the story, so I pray you enjoy these…

Thank you for your prayers, notes of encouragement, and financial support. Without all of those, we could not be reaching the lost for Jesus Christ!

Remember to share Jesus with the Lost wherever you are, because the Lost are wherever you are.

Please feel free to share this with others you think would be encouraged by it, and who will pray!

all for Jesus,

Mark

The Boy with the Fireman’s Helmet – 7 Years Later

Posted on Jun 01 , 2017 in Blog & Church_Teams & Kids_Ministry

Derek and me in 2010

This is TOO AWESOME not to share.

A lot of you have heard me talk about “Derek, the Red Firehat Kid.” And if you have heard me talk about Derek, I was probably sobbing, because Derek had a profound impact on me. In fact, Derek was one of the ways God called me into full-time ministry back in 2010.

My very first week with OAC in 2010, we did a Kid’s Bible Club and I met a 7-year-old named Derek. After the Bible message, I sat with him and took him through a gospel booklet. He told me he wanted to follow Jesus. I gave him the booklet and told him that it was my gift to him. This tenderhearted 7-year-old boy took his fireman’s hat off his head, put it on my head, and told me that it was “his gift to me.” I tried to tell him I didn’t want to take his helmet, but Derek insisted, and said, “I really want you to have it.” How can you forget a sweet kid like that?

I’ve had his firehat on the wall of my office ever since, with his name and date marked on it.

I have often told people how God used Derek to touch my heart, and I have often cried for him, praying for him, and wondering how he was growing up and turning out.

Meeting again in 2012

Two years later, in 2012, God orchestrated it so that we met again. My team and I were running a Kid’s Bible Club in the same neighborhood, and Derek was there. And he remembered me!

I reminded him about meeting him two years earlier and that he gave me his fireman’s helmet.

He said he remembered and he remembered the gospel booklet I gave him. I told him I have been praying for him for two years, and he smiled, and said, “Really? That’s so cool.”

I brought him through the same gospel booklet again and he said he wanted to follow the narrow path to Jesus Christ!

But that was it for five years. I’ve had a Bible Club in the same spot just about every summer, but I never saw Derek again, even though I always looked for him.

Well, a week ago I had a Church Team running a Kid’s Bible Club in the same spot, and kids were coming out for it. I was chatting with one of the Moms and told her that this neighborhood is very special to me because I met the coolest kid there a number of years ago.

The Mom asked me about it, and I gave her the story about Derek and the firehat.

Derek praying after the message in 2012.

She asked me how old he was and what year? When I told her that he was 7 in 2010, the Mom thought for a sec, and said, “I think that’s DJ. He goes by ‘DJ’ now. Oh, and there he is playing basketball…”

And just like that the Mom started yelling, “Hey DJ, get over here!”

Derek, or “DJ,” came over, and I introduced myself to him. I told him about the firehat when he was 7 and showed him a photo (the one of the two of us at the top of this post.)

Derek got all excited, and said, “Hey, that’s me!”

And he remembered me again, even 7 and 5 years later.

I told DJ that I have always remembered him because of his kindness and he was clearly moved.

And even though he’s a bit old for our Kid’s Bible Club, he sat down on the mat and participated in our Bible Club again!

DJ is 14 now, and here’s the BEST part: he’s going to a good Bible Church, part of the Youth Group, and he told me that he’s still following Jesus.

Wow wow wow wow WOW WOW WOW! I’m so so so thankful to God for such a gift like this! I’m over the moon!

I just had to share.

Me and Derek (DJ) in 2017

God is still seeking and saving the lost, and sometimes, we get to see a bit of the way God is using us. And there’s NOTHING better than being used by Jesus!

We love you and thank Jesus for you!

Thank you so much for your prayers, financial support, and notes of encouragement, without which we would not be able to reach the Lost for Jesus Christ!

If you’re supporting this ministry, then God is using you to reach people with the gospel, and that’s exciting!

Please contact us anytime and let us know how we can pray for you!

And please feel free to forward this to anyone you think would be blessed by it!

Presenting… Next Generation Evangelists!!!

Posted on Feb 25 , 2017 in Blog & Church_Teams & Subways & Training

Dear Saints,

Can God use High Schoolers to reach out to the world for Jesus Christ? You better believe He can!!! And it’s very exciting!!!

Recently I was asked by the Headmaster of a Christian School if I’d be willing to come in twice a week to teach an Evangelism Elective Class to a group of High Schoolers.

And I thought, “Are you kidding me? This is what I live for!

Honestly, I was a bit skeptical over whether or not 14-17-year-olds would have the spiritual and emotional maturity to take in the deluge of information I wanted to share with them. Would these kids just be taking the class because “they have to to get credit?”

I was astonished EVERY class at how mature the students were. They paid excellent attention. They participated in the discussions so well! They asked great questions. It was sooooo encouraging!

Here are some photos of the students, and how it went when I took them into the Subway in Boston to put their Evangelism skills in action!

Here is the Syllabus I developed for our sessions (each session was an hour and a half):

  1. “Evangelism is Great News”
Evangelism is great news for Christians, yet many Christians see evangelism as a chore they know they must do, rather than a gift we get to do. Sadly, many miss the WONDERFUL BLESSING it is to be God’s ambassador. How amazing that God would include us in His plan to save others! It’s love in action.

  2. “The Theology of Evangelism”
Purpose: To warn of the danger of presenting a man-centered gospel, and to warn of the danger of making the gospel about “happiness” instead of “righteousness.” (The Bill Gates dilemma – he’s the richest man in the world with whatever he wants, but if he dies without Christ, he’ll go to Hell.) Our job is to plant seeds and we are “successful” if we do that, regardless of how people appear to respond. Show Hell’s Best Kept Secret video.

  3. “Rubber Meets Road Evangelism”
Practical, practical, practical! How do you share the gospel with anybody. How do you avoid “rabbit trails” and how do you keep the conversation on what is important. Vital class! Watch Way of the Master “WDJD” video. Give out “Evangelism Cheat Sheet” cards with WDJD and CCCTTTT. Kirk and Gang Members video. Hand out “Write Your Own Testimony” assignment.

  4. “The Heartbreak of False Conversion”
Many people have been hurt by the wrong gospel message. Changing the gospel hurts people. Not only that, but it inoculates the lost. And some of the people who are most against our message are those who think they’re saved. Watch Way of the Master “True and False Conversions” video.

  5. “Real-World Apologetics”
How do you answer skeptics, seekers, mockers? Ask good questions. Learn to notice logical fallacies. Learn that it’s okay not to know. Ask for permission to look into their question and to meet up with them later. Resources: “8 Reasons” video. Proof of God website, various tracts that show our fallibility.

  6. “Answering Atheism”
Show and discuss “The Atheism Delusion” video.

  7. “Getting Off the Ground with Evangelism”
After most people are trained in evangelism, their reaction often is, “Now what?” Getting started in an evangelistic conversation can be the most difficult part. How do you engage a stranger and swing the conversation form the natural to the supernatural? How to make evangelism a “lifestyle” and not an “event.” Resources: Gospel Tracts. “George Street” short video. Rope Trick. Bible Coloring Book trick. Paint Board example.

  8. “Evangelism Road Trip”
To watch evangelism in action and give opportunity for people to participate if they are so lead. Heading down to the Subways in Boston to be part of Open Air Campaigners outreach to people from around the world!

I didn’t get any photos of this, but it was REALLY GREAT that Kristen, a Chinese student, got to meet a BUNCH of Chinese people and share the gospel with them in their native Mandarin language. How exciting is that??? Kristen gave away all my Mandarin gospel tracts (which is a very good problem to have.) I was really excited for her because she’s a relatively new Christian and wants to share Jesus back home in China when she goes back. Please pray for her.

I praise God for this opportunity to partner with the Christian School to spend time teaching these young people how to make Evangelism part of their life. Hallelujah!

If anyone wants me to provide similar training for your group, please contact me so we can chat about it.

That’s it for this update. We love you and thank Jesus for you!

Thank you so much for your prayers, financial support, and notes of encouragement, without which we would not be able to reach the Lost for Jesus Christ!

Please contact us anytime and let us know how we can pray for you!

And please feel free to forward this to anyone you think would be blessed by it!

Beach Evangelism Was SOOOOO Terrific!!!

Posted on Sep 24 , 2015 in Beach & Blog & Church_Teams & Street_Evangelism

Dear praying friends,

I love love love LOVE Evening Beach Evangelism!

We started our Beach Evangelism a few weeks early this summer, so it was great to have an “extended” season of ministry at the beach.

Please warm yourself up with this update on the outstanding things God did!

As you can see in the following photo, lots and lots of people from around the world and all different ages gather around and listen to the gospel message, many staying around afterwards for one-on-one discussions!

Also, Beach Evangelism is a great place to train and build up the Church! We had teams from a number of different local churches come out this summer to participate and hone their evangelism skills!

I thank God for my friend, Chris McKinley. You’ll see him in a number of the photos. I had to be out of State for a few weeks while I was the Youth Pastor at a Camp in Maine, and Chris did an AMAZING job taking my place and running the outreach while I was gone. Great teamwork!

I hope the following photos are an encouragement to you!

So many people stop to listen. Some walk away. Many stay. Many take literature and have one-on-one discussions afterward!

Here's a new one: I promise that my team and I are not those nasty obnoxious preachers. We speak respectfully. But sometimes we get opposition. As Chris was sharing Jesus, this man got right up and started yelling at the crowd against us. He did it again when I was preaching. He called the Police on us, but the Police took our side. I don't know this man's name, but I pray that God will heal his bitterness. You never know what's gonna happen on the streets.

The heckler called the Police, but they sided with us and even told him to leave us alone. It's still legal to engage in free expression of ideas in the public square.

The man who yelled at us the week before came back and yelled at us WITH A BULLHORN this time! He interrupted my preaching and LOUDLY through his bullhorn told everyone that I was "making them" listen and preventing them from seeing the professional sand castles. Incredibly, the crowd came to my defence! Unsaved people I don't even know yelled at the angry bullhorn guy, telling him they "want to hear" what I have to say, that they're there on their own free will, and that everyone can see the sand castles just fine. Praise God! God raised up an army to make the bullhorn guy leave. And then a number of people came up to me afterwards asking how I could be so calm towards him. I have credit to God, saying that I have the Holy Spirit in me and He gives me compassion for that man. Perhaps he'd been hurt in the name of religion? What a testimony! Thank You Jesus!

The "Solve this Riddle" message is useful because even after it's preached, it can be left up and people will come over to ask what it's about. It's a great catalyst to walk them through a gospel conversation. Robert is able to share Christ with more than a half-dozen people at once.

Another example of walking a man through "The Riddle" message. Chris' daughter, Chloe, is looking on and learning at a young age that it is totally okay to talk to people about Jesus. #ParentingWin

The first few weeks we were there, there was a professional sand castle display. Could any of these have formed by time and chance? Of course not! And we didn't form that way either. We were made by God Almighty!

I got to share Jesus with two Muslims who speak French, are from Morocco, live in Canada, but are vacationing at the beach in New England. Now that's a Divine Appointment! They didn't give me their names because they said they're too hard to pronounce in English. I spoke with them about their need for a blood sacrifice. They told me that Muhammad is all they need. I pointed out that Muhammad had a sin problem. He allowed married women to be raped by his army. These two protested and said Muhammad would NEVER have allowed that! I had them open their Koran to Surah 4:24. This was THEIR Koran. After seeing that Muhammad did allow the rape of married women, they said their own Koran must be a bad translation. I urged them to look it up in Arabic. I pleaded with them to seek the Jesus of the Bible. They left with literature in French and English and hopefully a lot to consider. Please pray that God grants them repentance to Eternal Life in Christ! It's amazing who you meet at the beach!

Amazing Church Teams – Summer 2015!

Posted on Aug 26 , 2015 in Blog & Church_Teams & Kids_Ministry & Street_Evangelism & Subways & Training

Dear Praying Friends,

One of my favorite parts of the ministry is building up the Church to be more effective evangelists!

Every summer we have Churches send Mission Trip Teams to spend a week with us in Boston.

This summer we worked with Church Teams from Maine, New Hampshire, a few from Massachusetts, and even one from next-door Chelsea, Massachusetts!

In addition to street evangelism, we pair up each Church Team with a local City Church to run a 5-Day Bible Club in the neighborhood of the local Church.

At the end of the week, the local Church has LOTS of new people and families to follow-up and continue to minister to them!

Each student learned about and did the following:

  • learned practical Evangelism and street Apologetics
  • share Christ one-on-one with an adult
  • hand out gospel tracts to adults in the city

This man is a Jehovah's Witness. I opened the Bible, had him read it, and asked him to explain what it means. I had him read John 2:18-22 to show that Jesus raised HIMSELF from the dead. I showed him Colossians 1:16 to show that Jesus is The Creator (and not created). I had him read Hebrews 1:6 to show that Jesus is NOT an angel, and He is supposed to be worshiped. Near the end the man was frustrated and wouldn't even look at the Scriptures. That's very sad. But God's Word is powerful and I pray that God will rescue that man from the oppression of the Jehovah's Witness cult.

After an open-air message, it's common to have good one-on-one discussions, like Eric is having on the right. And on the left... well, apparently that's a seven-on-one conversation. You never know what's gonna happen!!!

Lauren and I are speaking with Ahmed, a Muslim who recently came to the US from the Middle East. I opened the Scriptures with him, but he said they were corrupted. I showed him verses in the Koran that prove that Muhammad read and trusted the Bible, so he should too. Ahmed and I have been emailing back and forth, so please pray for my witness and for God to save this young man from Islam.

This is Cliff, a VERY tender young man who was studying to be a Muslim. Pastor Chris, Lauren, and I had a great conversation with him. I warned him about Islam and pleaded with him not to join. He said the things I told him about Islam were new to him. Cliff and I have been emailing pretty regularly and he's been asking very good questions. Please pray for his salvation!

I got to teach the first Bible lesson in a 5-Part Series on "The Gospel Through the Life of Moses." In part 1 we learned that there is One True God, He is eternal, He is the "I Am." And when He calls you to do something, He provides the abilities to get it done, for His glory. Good Theology there.

Every time we have a 5-Day Kid’s Bible Club, we teach a 5-Part Bible series. Open Air Campaigners has developed a number of fantastic 5-Day Series, and I’ve been able to teach most of them.

But for the Kid’s Club we had in South Boston, we taught “The Gospel Through the Patriarchs,” showing the gospel message through the life of Noah, Lot, and Abraham.

I had never taught that series, so I decided to jump in head-first and teach all five lessons. It was a lot of work and preparation, but I’m really thankful for the opportunity to learn how to paint and teach those excellent lessons.

Below are “Before” and “After” photos of each of the five teachings, with descriptions of each one. Feel free to check them out to get a feel for what the kids learn.

Lesson 1 we learned that everyone all over the world is guilty of sin, and God can see it. God hates sin so much that He decided to flood the world. Because God is so good and patient and kind, He waited and gave people 120 years to repent.

There was only one way to be saved... to go through the door of the Ark. God is kind, but He's just too, and must punish sin. God saved Noah and his family and they offered a sacrifice, as a picture of the final sacrifice to come, Jesus Christ. The rainbow is a reminder of God's promise that He will never again flood the world. But He will burn the world with fire, and He gives us time now to repent. We don't want to be like the people in Noah's day who didn't believe God and paid for it eternally. More on that in lesson 2...

In Part 2, we learned about the Tower of Babel. God is sovereign and powerful and WILL get His way, and we can obey and have "the easy way" or disobey and have "the hard way."

After God preserved the human race through Noah, He commanded everyone to spread out through the world. People refused to obey God (sin), and instead built a large tower to try to be like God (sin.)

Interestingly, God referred to Himself in the plural (God said, "Let US," a reference to the Trinity.)

To make the people do what they were told, (spread out throughout the earth,) God confused their language and made many many languages.

The people who spoke the same language grouped together and spread out throughout the earth, the very thing God commanded them to do from the start, but that they refused to do.

In the end, God got His way (of course!) but people received the consequences for disobedience.

This has great application for us today and is a great part of this 5-part series.

This is Part 3 of 5 on "The Gospel Through the Patriarchs. People all over the world were refusing to follow the True God, making up their own religions. In His kindness, God saw Abram and promised to make a great nation from him. But for that to happen, he needed a son. There was a problem, he was 75, and his wife, 65. But Abram believed God!

In fact, from his descendants would come the final and ultimate Deliverer who was first promised in Genesis 3, Jesus Christ!

God also told Abram to leave everything he knew, and Abram proved his faith was genuine because he did as God said. God blessed him so much, that there was strife between his people and his nephew, Lot's people. Abram let Lot choose which way to go, and Lot went toward Sodom and Gomorrah. That location lead to death.

God told Abram that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. Abram believed God, and God counted it as righteousness.

Belief, or faith, is what makes us right with God. More on this in Part 4...

Part 4 of "The Gospel Through the Patriarchs." What would you think of a Judge who let criminals go free? That would be a terrible Judge!

God is not a terrible Judge. He will punish sin. But He gives people a chance to repent. God told Abraham that He would make an example of Sodom and destroy it. If there were only 10 people in the whole city who followed God, then God would spare the city. Instead of finding 10 people following God, the opposite was true. When some newcomers came to town to stay with Lot, the men of the town demanded that Lot let them have the men to do things to them too horrible to mention. Because the men were really angels in disguise, they were able to escape, and warned Lot to leave and not look back. Lot and his family escaped, except Lot's wife, who looked back longingly and paid for it with her life.

Sin has deadly consequences. Our sin has deadly consequences too, but we'll find out the cure... in Part 5!

Part 5 in "The Gospel Through the Patriarchs." God promised a nation through Abraham when he was 75 years old. 25 years later, at age 100, he miraculously had a son, Isaac. No Isaac - no nation. So imagine Abraham's emotions when God called him to sacrifice his only son! But Abraham believed God and passed the test of faith. God provided a lamb to save the life of Isaac, and this lamb is a picture, or a preview of what God's final Lamb, Jesus, would do.

Jesus died and rose from the dead to take the place of those who repent of their sins and trust in His work on the cross! In Noah's time, God saw sin and warned that he would flood the earth, and there was one way to escape. Most people mocked. With Sodom and Gomorrah, God saw sin, and there was one way to escape. Most mocked. The exact same thing is happening today. God sees our sin, promises punishment, and most people mock. Still, some people take the only way to escape. The only way to escape is through Jesus Christ!

Please prayerfully consider having your Church Team join us in Boston for a week! I can guarantee that you won’t be the same again afterward!!!

Training Church Teams

Posted on Jul 30 , 2015 in Blog & Church_Teams & Kids_Ministry & Street_Evangelism & Training

One of my favorite favorite favorite things to do is to train and build up Church Teams!

There’s a limit to how many people one person can reach with the gospel of Jesus Christ. But if we help come alongside other Christians, and teach and encourage and train them to be ambassadors for Jesus wherever they go, then the number of people reached for the gospel grows exponentially!

Over the last few months, I’ve had the privilege to work with some superb local churches.

One inner-city church wanted help to reach their neighbors. So they invited me and my team in to train them, and we took them on the streets to try out talking to strangers. The results were amazing!

Afterwards, they hosted an “International Festival” where many from the neighborhood attended, and where I got to preach the gospel. Praise God!

Another local Church Team wanted to reach families in a local housing development. So we trained them in children’s ministry and went out and had a Kid’s Bible Club right there among the apartments.

The results were so positive, that the church has since had a 5-day Bible Club in the exact same spot, reaching all those families for Jesus!!!

We even had a Christian School send their 8th grade class out to the subways with us for a day to get a taste for stranger evangelism. I pray that the eyes of these young Christians were opened to see that we really can approach strangers and talk to them about the gospel.

God has opened doors for me to preach at a few other churches recently, to encourage and equip them in evangelism. This is my passion! One of the churches was far away, but one was really close by, and the one that’s close by has been sending people to evangelize with me at Hampton Beach recently!!! I praise God for that!!!

I’m convinced that one big reason Christians are not more bold about their faith is because of fear and lack of discipleship in this area. It’s an honor to be able to show Christians that we need not fear, and that it’s not that hard to go out and reach people who might otherwise not be reached!

Here are some encouraging photos from some of the training opportunities. Please click on any of them to enlarge.

This is what the painting looked like after I taught the Bible lesson. God's home is Heaven. He decides who gets in and out. God made everything perfect, but sin and death came when we broke His law. We were separated from God and we're now God's enemy. Jesus came down, lived a perfect life, never sinned, and died on the cross. He rose from the dead! Two others were crucified with Him. One made fun of Jesus, showing that his heart was focused on himself. This is how we all start out, and it leads us to the Lake of Fire. The other criminal believed in Jesus and looked to Him as his only Savior. He will forever be with the Lord in Heaven. And so will we if, like the second criminal, we turn from our sin (repent) and trust in the gospel (believe.) Good Theology there!

At another local Church, I got to preach on "God's Heart for the Lost," from Luke, chapter 15. I pray that many will be emboldened to lovingly share Jesus with urgency and compassion!

Remember to share Jesus with the Lost wherever you are, because the Lost are wherever you are.

Thank you for your prayers, notes of encouragement, and financial support. Without all of those, we could not be reaching the lost for Jesus Christ!

Please feel free to share this with others you think would be encouraged by it, and who will pray!

all for Jesus,

December Newsletter: An Amazing Summer!

Posted on Nov 24 , 2014 in Beach & Blog & Camp & Church_Teams & Kids_Ministry & Newsletters & Object_Lessons & Sermons & Street_Evangelism & Training

Dear friends,

Last week I mailed off our latest paper newsletter.

God has been doing AMAZING things, and it’s a privilege to share some of it with you. I pray that this newsletter is a blessing to you!

This newsletter has mostly photos in it, so it doesn’t take too long to read.

If you want to read it right away, or if you don’t get a paper one, please feel free to read an electronic version by clicking on the graphic below…

I also included a flyer for a device that automatically blocks pornography from every device in your home. No software needs to be installed on any of your devices. This is a win-win for everyone because families are protected from destructive pornography, and this helps fund the vital front-line evangelism work we do.

Please check out this flyer at: http://Luke-15.org/2014-11-OMTS.pdf

If you don’t usually receive the paper copy of the newsletter, but would like to, please contact us and let us know your address and we’ll gladly add you to our mailing list! πŸ™‚

We love you and thank God for you! Please contact us anytime and let us know how we can pray for you!

And please feel free to forward this to anyone you think would be blessed by it!

For Christ and His gospel,

Mark, Shelby, Vivienne, Juliana, Caleb, and Gabriella
